While I am away I should welcome you to our excellent blog. It was created last week while you were writing your exam. I know you will enjoy it!
Today's task can take you up to a week to piece together.
Specifically, you and a partner shall pair up and discuss these different types of government. Explain them to the reader as if they were fresh and had never heard of a government prior to now. Discuss what your type of government is and why it is superior to the the other types of government. Use 2 different sources to back up your staetment and provide examples. Reply to this thread in order to create your comment for marking. See the previous thread for marking scheme. Good news - you can edit your post up until the day I mark it, which will be week from now.
I'll leave it up to you to sort out what your teams are and which type you've picked. You can write about the experience of your team picking as something submissible.
Monarchy
Constitutional Government
Democracy
Dictatorship
Distribution of Authority
Federal System
Unitary State
Confederation
Other
Other and other
Leave your draft of work here by clicking on the comments at the bottom of this thread. You can come back and pick up where you left of by editing in the future but at least you have something put down by clicking on the comments.

To start off with, we should know what democracy is. Democracy is formed when there are key elements. Firstly, to choose and replace a government, a fair election must happen. Secondly, people should actively participate politically. Thirdly, there should be a protection for human rights. Lastly, laws apply equally to all citizens. People are able to choose their leaders in a democratic society. Also, they should be able to freely criticize their elected leaders too. In brief, the country should form a government by people, where the rule of majority applies.
ReplyDeleteThere is no question that democratic government type is superior to other types. To support this statement, democracy cause more economic prosperity and growth. According to an academic estimate, using a panel of countries between 1960 and 2010 as a data, countries that switched from non-democratic to democratic government achieve about 20% higher GDP per capita in the long run. By graphing GDP per capita and years around democratization transition and reweighting country-years so that each data represent the change effectively, it shows a clear graph heading upwards after a few years of stagnation.
According to Merriam-webster, the definition of democracy is, “a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.” With the definition, the list of top 15 GDP countries indicates that every country in the list is democratic. This directly leads to the conclusion that all powerful countries are democratic.
Because of the importance of economy in our modern society, governments with high economic level, which are democratic, proves my point.

I completely agree with you. The democratic government system is the right way to go. Democracies promote equality and growth within a country. It is very important to make people feel like their opinion and ideas are valued in their society.
DeleteThe term democracy comes from the Greek language and means "rule by the (simple) people". Modern democracy was not formulated until the late 17/18th centuries, when philosophers defined a number of key components of democracy: separation of powers, basic civil rights / human rights, religious liberty and separation of the church and state.
ReplyDeleteAs for why it's better, there are a few reasons for that. Winston Churchill famously remarked: "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
First and foremost, democracies have far more freedoms than other styles of government. Citizens of a democratic country are usually granted the freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Other important freedoms include freedom of the press; freedom of mobility; and freedom of belief and religion. This allows citizens to criticise their own government without fear of retaliation.
Secondly, similar to freedom, democratic countries represent the will of the people. The government represents the views of the people who elect them and the people can throw them out if the government does things that the people do not like. Unlike other forms of government, democracy is *SUPPOSED* to be about the little man, rather than the elite that are often disconnected from how everyone else lives their lives.
Thirdly, democratic countries have fared much better economically than their autocrat counterparts. The most developed and richest countries are all democracies. While they may well have been developing their democracies during their initial industrialisation, democracy, and the freedom it brings, is increasingly necessary for economic growth once the country has moved to being mostly dependent upon services, rather than manufacturing or natural resource exploitation for economic growth.
Therefore, despite certain shortcomings associated with democracy, such as it's inability to make decisions quickly, it is generally better than other styles of government.

Yes, while democracies sometimes take a while to make decisions, they are a very effective way to guarantee rights and freedoms to a country's citizens. Democratic countries provide their people with the freedom speech, freedom of religion/beliefs, and many other very important rights. Democracies benefit the people.
DeleteThere are many types of government that exist in countries throughout the world. Before I discuss the best type of government in my opinion, I’m going to provide quick descriptions of the other types of government listed above.
ReplyDeleteMonarchy - a system of government in which a certain person has power, usually a king or queen.
Constitutional Government - a government which is outlined by a constitution, such as a list of generally accepted laws that powers the actions of the government.
Democracy - a government run by the people of the country (people have the opportunity to make changes in their government).
Dictatorship - a style of government in which a dictator has supreme power.
Distribution of Authority - different jobs and responsibilities being distributed throughout government systems, giving authority to make needed improvements.
Federal System - a system that divides its power throughout all its levels of government, from federal to local governments.
Unitary State - one level of government that has power over every location in a country.
Confederation - a system of government that has many parties and levels.
Canada has a democratic government. In my opinion, this is the best type of government because it gives the people in Canada the opportunity to have their voices and opinions heard. It gives citizens the ability to vote for their leader, which does not happen in every country. Democratic governments make people feel like they are valued in their country, because they have the option to vote towards changes in it. While there is one main issue with a democracy, they are generally very successful. The issue is that a portion of the country will be left unsatisfied. For example, in an election, the most popular vote wins, which means that people who voted for a losing party would not be happy with the results. While people may be unhappy, in the end, they still were given the chance to vote, which some people do not get to experience.
Some main benefits of a democratic government is that people do not just have the right to vote, but they also have many other rights. Generally, citizens of non-democratic countries are not granted many rights or have limited rights. In countries like North Korea for example, citizens are given very restricted rights, compared to Canada. Canadian rights promote equality and responsibility. There are fewer issues regarding equality because affected people can take legal action if they are being discriminated against.
Democracies also open up opportunities for change. People can vote for leaders that promise beneficial change, therefore the citizens have the power to make change in their country. This empowers people living in democratic countries.

The Haudenosaunee people have a very cool form of government. It is very similar to American Government. They had different seats in the house, and everybody could vote and everybody had a chance. All nations and states had a say. They also had major laws, like you cannot commit murder. Then, they have minor laws for specific areas such as consequences for theft. That's how it relates to America's government - which is because America 's government is based largely off of this. In ceremonies, smudges are preformed, before everyone gets to speak their mind, as well as listen to what other people are saying. This is better than other forms of government because it is run by the people, making it much mdore difficult for oppression to occur. Additionally, it is better than current day democracy because EVERYONE gets to speak, regardless of age and status. In today;'s world, kids and teenagers don't have a large say in government about issues they care about, such as education. And, this form of government values the opinion of poorer people as much as the wealthy, whereas in North America today, it takes millions of dollars to campaign and requires a lot of money to have a seat on the senate.
