Description:

As citizens in a democratic society, we must understand the meaning and elements of democracy and the variety of global issues that surround us in today’s world. This course has focused on the three strands of democratic participation: Active Citizenship, Informed Citizenship, and Purposeful Citizenship. This culminating activity asks you to assess where you are, and where you hope to be in the future with reference to each these three concepts by demonstrating your knowledge on a global or Canadian issue that affects today’s citizens.

1) Choose a Topic

Choose a topic that you are interested in from the list below:

• Legalization of Marijuana              • Global Poverty
• Environmental Protection Laws   • Right to Education
• Animal Rights                                  • Child Labour
• Gun Control                                    • Homelessness
• Genocide                                         • World Hunger

2) Research and complete MLA Citation Worksheets

You are to thoroughly research your chosen topic. Use the attached research worksheets to help you keep track of your research information. The more you research, the better your understanding of your topic will be. You will be submitting the research sheets (typed) and they will be marked as a part of your Knowledge and Understanding of your topic. Wikipedia is a great source of information but you must verify all information for accuracy through other websites and sources.
3) Complete ONE task from each column. (3 items in total)

With all the information that you have gathered on the issue, you should now be able to develop a position on the topic. How do you feel about it? Is Canada currently doing enough? What should be done to resolve the issue?

3) Complete ONE task from each column. (3 items in total) continued…

You will now support your position by completing several tasks. Pick 1 Writing Task, 1 Presentation Task, and 1 Visual Task from the following chart below. Complete these tasks using the research that you have collected on your issue.

  2. I handed out paper copies in class. I realize the graphic/table isn't showing up on this website. There are more in the class binder.

    1. Nawh, wait - you have 2 other tasks to perform as well. If you're only doing a slide presentaton then 15 mins. but since this class has two other options based on accommodating for everyone's learning styles I can accept a 5 min. minimum.
